Badongo.com is also a very good service. They have a download limit of 200 MB per hour, which is pretty generous, and are VERY reliable-myself and my members have hosted all kinds of, um, files, and Badongo has yet to delete one. In fact, go ahead and try to get one deleted-you’ll receive a response stating that if you don’t hold the copyright to the material, YOU might get in trouble for reporting it. What about porn, you ask? Technically it’s against the rules, but again, if you can’t prove ownership of the file, you can’t get past their automated response.
Another hoster NOT to consider is Mediafire.com-at least, not if you like to host adult files. It seems that Mediafire actively looks for and deletes such content with a fervor unmatched by any other service. Don’t even bother.
It seems that Rapidshare is the most popular not because they provide the best service, but because of other reasons-most likely marketing. I’m reminded of AOL in the 90’s-everybody wanted to use their service because it was the only one they knew about without realizing just how BAD it was.
Rapidshare’s position allows them to abuse customers. The excessive wait times between AND before downloads and the way they screwed their Rapidshare.de customers are just a couple of examples. It’s tempting to buy a premium account, which is just what they want, but I don’t spend money on a company that blatantly lies. Rapidshare.de did not leave its premium members holding the bag because its “hard drives are full”. Extra storage, even server class storage, is easily obtainable-especially when you have SO MANY CUSTOMERS that you are maxed out.
The real solution to Rapidshare isn’t any IP release or anonymous proxy workaround-it’s using a different service to host your files. Rapidshare CAN be competitive with other services instead of treating their free users so poorly they are forced to pay-and they will if business needs dictate it. Remember “Happy Hour” a few months ago? As many free downloads as you want for a certain time. That was in response to pressure from a competitor.
I really agree with you about rapidshare.
It is crap and should not be used by anyone anymore!
Oh, and I will test badongo when I have broadband again. *sigh*
[Edit] Just reviewed mediafire. I think it’s great, and when you are concerned about porn getting deleted, why not rar it up and give the files a non-desciptive name? [/Edit]
